This auction we have a wonderful collection of illustrated books, gift books and fine publisher bindings. Many books are from an exciting period of printing innovation from 1850s until 1920s.
This ability to produce fine prints from woodcuts, engravings and chromolithography saw the ability to profusely and more cheaply illustrate books. This auction has many magical, whimsical and romantic books illustrated by Arthur Rackham, Edward Julius Detmold and Kay Nielson, George Cruikshank, The Brother Dalziel and many other talented artists and engravers. This boom in book illustration and printing is often referred to as the Golden Age of illustration.

The publisher would bind these books beautifully with elaborately embellishments making them suitable as gift books. Some of these bindings show the markers marks, sometimes hidden in the decorative motifs, stamped in gold along the dentelles or even with little book binder labels. Designers included: Marcus Ward, John Leighton, Hugh Thomson, Bertha Stuart, Margaret Armstrong, Hayday, Hetzel and more.
Signed Cressida Campbell, an original drawing by Donald Friend as well as a good and interesting collection of Indian history and other Australiana.
