Journey Through Time

Print and Bindings from the 15th to the 21st Century

This auction we take you on a journey through the history of printing and the dissemination of knowledge. You will see examples from the late 15th Century until the 21st century. You will notice little has changed over this time. From the way we use headings, columns and different size fonts to split up information and the way we organise with indexes and point to page numbers. The internet borrows lots of these ideas. For example, as you scroll through our catalogue index page you will click on page or lot numbers and read the paragraphs.

This auction features an array of finely bound volumes by Sir Winston Churchill, from the London bindery of Sangorski & Sutcliff. Of special significance are early works, including the Malakand Field Force (1898), the authors first published book; and his first novel titled Savrola (1900).

Another highlight is the circumnavigation voyage of the Danish vessel Galathea, published in three volumes from 1849 to 1851. The beautiful tinted lithographic plates illustrate scenes from Hawaii, Tahiti and East Asia.

Other books include militaria, especially Australian battalion histories, along with a medley of other fine books in the arts and sciences.

And finally, the first six lots are glorious bound limited editions of Winnie-the-Pooh, and other lovable classics by A.A. Milne.
